St. Mary’s church, Pyrton is the parish church of the South Oxfordshire villages, Pyrton and Shirburn. Originally two separate parishes, each with its own church, in 1981 they were combined with Watlington and later, in 1994, with Britwell and Swyncombe to form the Icknield Benefice.

The church is surrounded by extensive grounds, much of which has been used as a burial ground over several centuries. Some of the earliest gravestones date back to the 1500s. In February and March there is a magnificent display of snowdrops and wild daffodils, which attract visitors from far and wide. In 2005, after advice from Berkshire, Buckingshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust, the churchyard has been maintained as a Living Sanctuary for wildlife.
